Following a spectacular Gala Launch where the High Octane Chefs of MIGF 2016 were showcased in an action packed show, the following two days saw KLites and visitors throng the 14th floor of Berjaya Times Square Hotel to experience Taste MIGF.

Complete with Harley Davidson and KTM bikes, the Theatre of Cuisines drew back its curtains once again for one and all to enjoy a super gourmet safari. Cooking up a storm over the weekend, each of the 25 restaurants in this year’s Festival offered bite-sized portions of their Festival Menus, the full versions of which are available throughout October.

Cuisines From Around The World

The restaurant booth designs this year were among the most eye-catching in years – drawing huge crowds with its intricate design was that of Little Heritage House. The comprehensive build was a replica of a traditional Nyonya household, featuring functioning doors and windows. Just as impressive were the tasting portions offered up by this Festival debutant, transporting foodies to the Straits Settlements with authentic Peranakan cuisine.

As visitors made their way around, they could be seen chatting with chefs as they sampled food, getting to know the culinary masterminds – one of the many perks of Taste MIGF.

Also making a splash were the trio of Genting restaurants – e18hteen, The Olive and LTITUDE Restaurant, Bar & Lounge – each of which were replete with elements of the Festival theme. The Saujana Club Resort’s Senja also went all out theme-wise, with KTM bikes and the hood of a rally car fronting its booth.

Gastro Dollars sold like hotcakes as the crowd increased throughout the day – each tasting portion was priced between one and three Gastro Dollars – representing a bargain for the sumptuous food on offer.
Epicure International Gourmet Village
Meanwhile the Epicure International Gourmet Village was home to vendors that offered a wide selection of products and gourmet delicacies. Aside from selling a delectable range of pastries, Sunway Le Cordon Bleu hosted cooking classes from their roster of chefs including Technical Director Chef Rodolphe Onno, alumni and DC Restaurant owner Chef Darren Chin, lecturer Chef David Morris and alumni Chef Dato' Fazley Yaakob.

“We’ve always been a strong supporter of Taste MIGF as it offers a perfect platform to bring together industry professionals and the public in a fully interactive manner. We get to talk to the customers and show them how it’s done in a professional kitchen. Any event which furthers this type of activity is a winner in our books,” said Chef Rodolphe after finishing one of his workshops.
Sashimi grade fish of all kinds were seen at GST Fine Food where an immaculate display of seafood became one of the highlights of the Village. Eager for visitors to sample the ocean delights, Chef Tetsuya doled out portions of seabass and salmon prepared using the ikejime method of paralysing a fish to lock in freshness. Just opposite, Cajun Asian drew hungry Festival goers with Eastern/Western spice blends – the perfect combination of Cajun and Thai ingredients creating an irresistible aroma.

The frozen flavours of Gelatomio won the hearts of everyone that walked by with scoops of Madagascan vanilla, forest berries and more; and those partial to a glass of golden bubbly could get their fill at Angel Champagne where the finest Brut, Vintage and Rosé were available.
Veterans at Taste MIGF, Artisan Cellars were ever present with a host of old world wines on display, and those looking to restore balance to their lives could do so at Young Living Essential Oils where therapeutic grade oils help people in their quest for natural healing.
Learning From The Experts
Those wanting to find out more about the precious oils could do so at a workshop hosted by Annie Chan who has spent the past decade exploring Buddhist and Yoga philosophy, using Young Living Essential Oils as a tool for better daily wellness.

One of the many workshops held over the weekend, the lineup also included wine sessions by Sebastian Le Francois from Jasons Food Hall, Thomas Ling from Entwine Consultancy and Datuk Iain Lo, all of which focused on different aspects of wine tasting and how to recognise different varieties. Coffee lovers were catered to by Fergus Lim with a master class in coffee appreciation. Having been involved in all levels of the coffee trade, from harvesting to roasting and supplying, Lim brought a wealth of knowledge to his class.
As always, the plethora of chefs’ cooking classes over the weekend proved a huge hit. As one of the cornerstones of Taste MIGF, the classes featured some of the city’s best chefs divulging trade secrets in intimate classroom settings. Chef Jochen Kern – Director of the School of Culinary Arts at Berjaya University College of Hospitality kicked off the sessions on Saturday, packing out his kitchen as he took the audience through a pan fried sturgeon steak recipe.

Chef Mandy Goh from LTITUDE Restaurant Bar & Lounge brought her version of a surf and turf to the classroom, while Chef Naim Bin Hassan from Southern Rock Seafood Kitchen shared his passion for seafood delights. Melissa Wong’s Baking for Kids proved popular and Chef James Ho Soon Boon from Ruyi & Lyn showed how his innovative Chinese cuisine comes together in meticulous fashion.

Luxury Defined
The atmosphere was buzzing throughout the entire weekend with plenty of attractions covering the grounds. The Macao Government Tourist Office – part of the LuxuryPlus Showcase – presented some of the most exciting events coming up in the country including the 63rd Macao Grand Prix, the Macao International Marathon and the Macao Light Festival. Racing simulators set up in the pavilion came with fantastic prizes for fastest times, including a three day, two night all expenses paid trip to watch the Grand Prix in November.

The Jasons Food Hall pavilion was crammed from morning to evening with customers browsing its aisles – premium chocolates, ready-made gourmet sauces and garden fresh produce attracted the crowds. Further down the venue, Lotus Arts de Vivre and Fragrance Du Bois brought exquisite luxury to the event with pristine works of art and bespoke fragrances respectively.

“Taste MIGF is a very exciting event that I would definitely visit even if I wasn’t a chef myself just to find out what is happening and to keep track of all the new restaurants in Malaysia,” said the Hong Kong based chef.
Keeping the spirit lively throughout the weekend were the sounds of the Blue Elephant DJs, spinning from atop the stage arch. The deep house beats provided the perfect soundtrack to the carnival-like atmosphere inside the Theatre of Cuisines. Also making a magical appearance on both days was the great Moudini, mystifying foodies with one-of-a-kind tricks and mind bending illusions. His routines ended with a special performance by his children who awed on lookers with a high octane dance.

All in all, Taste MIGF 2016 was the perfect preview for the upcoming Festival in October. The restaurants will be serving their full Festival Menus at special prices along with irresistible offers guarenteed to make your dining experiences hugely memorable.
